Sessions, blocks and online lessons

Private tutors typically invoice in three ways: individual hourly sessions, prepaid block bookings and online lessons. Whatever the shape, the invoice tool works the same way — put each line item on its own row, price it, and the totals fill themselves in.

  • Hourly session — a 1-to-1, priced per hour.
  • Block booking — a set of sessions priced together, often at a small discount.
  • Online lesson — a remote session, billed in advance.

Block bookings shift you from chasing payment every week to being paid for a term of work in advance. A typical structure is a 10-session block invoiced up front, which secures the schedule and gives the parent a reason to keep the student attending.

Invoicing in advance

For most tutors a session is worth far more than it costs to bill, so you want payment before the work. Send the invoice as soon as the block is agreed, mark it received once it clears, and confirm the dates the block covers on the invoice itself.

VAT for tutors

Only VAT-registered businesses charge VAT. Most private tutors earn below the £90,000 VAT threshold and issue invoices with no VAT at all. If you are registered, tick the VAT box and the invoice shows the net, VAT and gross totals a VAT invoice needs.

Records for self-assessment

Every invoice is income for your self-assessment return. Keep the PDFs, mark each one received once paid, and your income figure is the total of what you invoiced plus what you were paid in cash.

Frequently asked questions

What should a tutor invoice include?

Your name and trading name, your address, a unique invoice number, the invoice date, the student or parent name and reference, each session or block with its price, the total and your payment details. VAT only if you are VAT-registered.

Should I sell blocks or single sessions?

Most tutors sell blocks prepaid. It secures your schedule, gets you paid in advance and makes the parent committed to the block.
